How I’m Saving Money This Season By Not Giving Gifts

Like everyone else, I love giving gifts, especially at this time of year. However, it often comes with unnecessary financial strain. I have two little ones, a three-year-old and a one-year-old. My main focus this year is on making Christmas a magical time for both of them. So, I’ve decided not to give traditional gifts this year to save some money. Here’s how I’m embracing a gift-free season, saving money, and still spreading joy.

1. Shifting the Focus to Quality Time

Spending quality time with each other is important. I am aiming to host a few puzzle get-togethers with hot chocolate and a nice puzzle on cold days. Other great ideas include hosting a game night, sharing a meal, or just catching up over a cup of coffee. All of these activities can create lasting memories without the price tag.

I’ve always loved making gifts. This year, I’m going to create memories with my kids while also creating beautiful gifts. We are going to make ornaments together to give to others. I’m also going to work on some quilts and aprons for some of the women in our family, made from repurposed onesies from both of my children. This approach allows me to spread joy without overspending.

Let’s face it, most of us have plenty of stuff. Instead of purchasing items, I’m offering experiences like hiking, cooking lessons, or visits to a museum. Sharing these adventures places a focus on quality time and you really can’t put a price on the memories you’ll create. Many of these experiences can be free or low-cost, making it possible to celebrate the season without straining your wallet.

4. Communicating My Intentions Clearly

It’s important to communicate your intentions for the holidays clearly. You should discuss your choice to have a gift-free season with your loved ones. Explain your reason for wanting to do so. You might find that some of your friends and family are relieved to escape some of the pressures of gift-giving too. Ultimately, it can help create a shared understanding that the season is about connection, not consumerism.

5. Repurposing and Regifting Thoughtfully

As mentioned above, I’ll be repurposing some of my kids’ onesies into quilts and some of their swaddles into aprons. Repurposing and regifting shouldn’t be frowned upon. You might consider giving books you’ve enjoyed, gently used kitchen gadgets or even vintage items. These can be really meaningful gifts to the right person, allowing you to be thoughtful without spending anything.

6. Focusing on Acts of Kindness

You can’t go wrong with small acts of kindness. These things can have a big impact on people and they cost nothing. A heartfelt letter, volunteering together, or taking the time to help a neighbor out are all ways I’m considering gifting my time this year. You’ll find these gifts often resonate long after the Christmas season is over.

Being gift-free this season has made me think about traditions I’d like to hold in the future. Reducing my financial stress around Christmas has allowed me to truly enjoy the season. Being more intentional is something I plan to carry into future years. In the end, I’m excited about reshaping the “norm” for our family and setting traditions in place that focus more on quality time and loving one another.

8. Investing in Self-Care Instead

As a mom of little ones, I really don’t get to spend a lot of time on myself. With the money I’m saving not buying gifts, I plan to invest in self-care. A massage, a haircut, and some quiet time away from the house (after the holidays). Prioritizing my own well-being makes the holiday season more enjoyable for me. It’s a reminder that taking care of myself is just as important as caring for others.

Having a gift-free holiday season doesn’t have to be a drag. It can actually be quite liberating and rewarding. Focusing on quality time, thoughtfulness, and self-care has given me new ways to celebrate the season without putting a strain on my wallet. So, if you’re trying to find ways to save this season, you might want to rethink your traditions and adopt a gift-free approach.
