Want to transform your backyard into an exciting play zone? An outdoor playset brings adventure right to your home, keeping kids active and happy while building lifelong skills and memories.

Colorful slides and structures surrounded by lush trees in an outdoor park during fall.

Why Kids Love Outdoor Playsets (And Parents Do Too!)

Natural Fun and Exercise

Kids climb, swing, and slide their way to better health without even realizing they’re exercising. They build stronger muscles, improve balance, and boost coordination through play.

Screen-Free Entertainment

Playsets naturally draw kids outdoors, away from tablets and TVs. Fresh air, sunshine, and physical play create healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Social Play Hub

Watch as your backyard becomes the neighborhood hotspot! Kids make friends, learn to share, and develop social skills while having fun together.

Adventure and Imagination

One day it’s a castle, the next a pirate ship! Kids create their own stories and adventures, boosting creativity and problem-solving skills.

Family Bonding Time

Share special moments with your children as you push them on swings or race down slides together. These simple activities create lasting family memories.

Choosing Your Perfect Playset

Know Your Space

Before shopping:

  • Measure your yard
  • Plan for safety zones (3-6 feet around equipment)
  • Check for overhead branches
  • Pick a spot visible from house windows

Materials Matter

Metal Sets

Budget Planning

Prices range from $500 to $5,000+. Consider:

  • How many children will use it
  • How long you plan to keep it
  • Which features matter most
  • Installation costs

Safety Tips for Happy Play

  • Install on level ground
  • Add protective surfacing
  • Check equipment regularly
  • Teach proper playset use
  • Supervise young children

Making Memories

From birthday parties to everyday adventures, your backyard playset becomes the center of family fun. Watch as your children grow stronger, braver, and more confident with every climb, swing, and slide.

For many families, mine included, family history is fading away. Many younger generations don’t take an interest in familial history until it’s too late and a part of the family’s identity is lost. I’ve been on a mission this last year to save my family history. Here are eight ways I’m trying to preserve my family history for future generations.

1. Preserve Family Photos and Videos

Many family photos have been left in a box and have faded over time. There’s hardly ever writing on the photos, making it hard to distinguish who the relatives are in each photograph. I’ve been working on digitizing my family’s photos using a scanner app. This makes it easy to share the albums with other family members. Some companies like Legacybox will handle this process for you. All you have to do is send them your photos and videos and they’ll do the rest.

2. Dig Deeper into Your Family Tree

I’ve been working on my and my husband’s family trees using Ancestry.com. There are so many fascinating things I’ve learned about our ancestors that I’d never heard before. I also utilized 23andMe for a DNA test. I was connected with so many family members that I didn’t know I was related to from all around the world!

3. Write Down or Digitize Family Recipes

family recipe book
Pexels

One of my biggest regrets is not writing down and preserving family recipes. After all, food is often a way that families bond with one another. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get my great-grandma’s stuffing just right as it has been tweaked and cooked from memory for so many years. Most of my mom’s recipes were lost during moves or are so stained that they are illegible. For what few recipes I do have left, I used Create My Cookbook to make a book for myself and my relatives.

4. Record Family Stories

telling family stories

After a relative passes away, the stories they always told become harder to recall. I wish that I had asked my grandparents more questions about their lives and written it all down. My husband, who still has his grandparents, decided to start a Storyworth subscription. Every week, he picks a prompt to send to his grandparents to learn more about their stories. We’ve learned so much about what they were like in high school, their proudest accomplishments, and so much more. We can’t wait to make all of the grandkids a keepsake book this Christmas filled with all of their responses.

5. Organize Family Reunions

family reunions
Pexels

Every year, my dad’s family used to have a family reunion that included all of our extended family. We’d gather on the family farm and have a huge celebration. As the matriarchs of the family got older, the reunions stopped. If this has happened in your family, try and organize a gathering. Some families take a trip together or spend the day in the park together. Whatever it looks like for your clan, try to set up an event where you can gather and enjoy each other’s company. This is a great way to learn about other family members’ history and their personal stories.

6. Preserve Heirlooms

family heirloom
Pexels

Heirlooms are often stored in attics and basements where they get damaged. When our family home’s basement got flooded, many family keepsakes were not salvageable. Humidity, temperature, and sunlight are all important things to consider when preserving heirlooms. A temperature-controlled storage unit could be a good option for keeping your family history alive.

7. Start a Family Group

Video chat with family
123rf.com

Families often end up spread across the country and the world, making preserving family history difficult. My family has created a Facebook group where we keep each other updated and share photos and other memories. You can even use Facebook to video chat with the group. This is a great way to stay connected, no matter how far apart you are.

8. Fill in The Gaps

Looking back on family history
Pexels

As I went through my family history, I started to see gaps in things I didn’t know. By asking other family members, using genealogy tools, and doing a bit of detective work, I was able to fill in the gaps in my family’s story. If you are struggling to make sense of your ancestry, don’t get discouraged! Fill in what you know and go from there.

Saving Family History for Future Generations

Preserving your family history can seem like a daunting task, but it is so rewarding. With time and effort, you can have meaningful stories, recipes, heirlooms, and photos to pass on to future generations. The more we engage with our past, the less of our history we will lose in the future.

Most people think of money or real estate when they think about an inheritance. However, there are a number of things that carry sentimental value for your loved ones outside of cash and property. They might want family recipes, cherished Christmas ornaments, or other types of non-traditional inheritances. So, if you want to leave something that will truly be cherished by your loved ones, take time to consider leaving some of these items.

1. Family Recipes: A Culinary Legacy

1. Family Recipes: A Culinary Legacy

My Nana left me three recipe boxes that I’ll always cherish. Some of the recipes in those boxes are things we gathered around a table to enjoy together. Not to mention, everything is written in her beautiful handwriting, which is something I hold dear to my heart. If you’re looking for non-traditional inheritances to leave behind, this is something that your family might really appreciate. Recipes can be passed down from generation to generation. Passing them down can also spark memories of family dinners and holiday celebrations where you were present. It’s an amazing thing to leave behind.

2. Christmas Ornaments: Symbols of Family Traditions

2. Christmas Ornaments: Symbols of Family Traditions

Another thing my Nana left behind for me was her Christmas decorations and ornaments. My Nana made a lot of her Christmas decor, making it extra special. Additionally, I spent a lot of time at her house around the holidays. So, seeing everything brings back a flood of memories as I prepare to get everything out to celebrate the holidays this year. Many of the little trinkets you have out every year tell stories. They’re more than just things that collect dust and get brought out once a year. A hand-painted ornament made by your child, a vintage ornament handed down from your great-grandmother, or a souvenir from a family vacation can all hold significant meaning.

3. Handwritten Letters: A Personal Connection Across Time

3. Handwritten Letters: A Personal Connection Across Time

Handwritten letters have become a rare and precious gift in the digital age. If you leave behind letters, you are essentially providing your family with a personal connection to you that will last long after you are gone. You might consider writing down some words of advice for them or jotting down some special memories from time to time. Whatever it is, handwritten letters can be a powerful thing to leave your loved ones and can create an intimate link between you and future generations.

4. Photographs and Family Albums: A Visual Legacy

4. Photographs and Family Albums: A Visual Legacy

My Meemaw had tons of photos from decades of family vacations. Many of them were sorted into photo albums, based on the year, location, and who went. These are something I hold close to my heart. Unlike digital photos, printed photographs can really tell a story. At some point, I’ve become the person in charge of all of the family’s photos and I love going through them. It creates a narrative of your family’s history and, for younger generations, it can give a glimpse into the past. A well-preserved album becomes a legacy that helps preserve your family’s story for years to come.

5. Heirloom Jewelry: More Than Just Accessories

5. Heirloom Jewelry: More Than Just Accessories

My Nana had piles and piles of jewelry. While some of it was certainly worth something, there were a lot of fun pieces that I remember her wearing often. Some of the costume jewelry is being passed onto my daughter, who enjoys playing dress-up. Each piece will get its use. Other heirloom pieces went to myself and my mom. These pieces of jewelry hold a special meaning because they were worn every day or for special occasions. One specific ring was given to her when she retired, something she really cherished. Ultimately, passing these things down helps the next generation feel connected to the past. Each time it’s worn, the piece serves as a reminder of the person who once owned it.

The Real Legacy You Leave Behind

When it comes to inheritance, the non-traditional items tend to hold the most meaning for your loved ones. Whether you want to leave behind your family recipes or heirloom jewelry, each one is seen as a treasure by your family, without a doubt. These things are irreplaceable and bring back memories they’ll hold onto for a lifetime. So, the next time you think about what to leave behind, consider the items that truly reflect the heart of your family.

As a mother of two young children, we have been searching for some family traditions that we’d like to carry out with our kids. Thankfully, there is no shortage of possibilities. With apps like Pinterest and Facebook, there are tons of ideas floating around out there. I’ve decided to take on a few family traditions to make the holiday season even more magical for my little ones. You might want to try them too!

1. Missle Toads

1. Missle Toads
123rf.com

“Missle toads” are something humorous that our family started doing last year. If you get caught with someone under the “missle toad,” which is just a toy frog with a missle attached to it hanging in the doorway, then you have to have a “battle.” This means different things at different times. For the kids, it’s a tickle fight or a pillow fight. The winner gets a treat! If we are throwing a spirited party, you might have to answer a trivia question and the loser has to take a shot of liquor. It’s great fun and my three-year-old gets a kick out of it.

2. Cookie Decorating Party
123rf.com

Each year, we throw a cookie decorating party with our friends and their kids. It’s a lot of fun to get everyone together. Of course, the children have a blast. You can ask each of the party attendees to bring a cookie to contribute. It’s also a good idea to have some regular food on hand so everyone isn’t crashing from the sugar rush. You can play some holiday music and just enjoy being together while creating cookie masterpieces.

3. Elf on the Shelf

3. Elf on the Shelf

This is the first year we’re doing Elf on the Shelf. I’ve watched many of my friends do this year after year and was excited for my oldest to be old enough to understand it. The initial $35 purchase for the elf can provide you with years of fun memories. There are a ton of ideas on what to do with the elf online, and it’s a great way to get everyone into the holiday spirit.

4. Fun Daily Crafts

4. Fun Daily Crafts
123rf.com

Crafts are some of the best things to do with your kids (or on your own) during the holidays. They can make great gifts and, more than that, they can be great fun. I have something planned to do every day leading up to Christmas. Some are pre-made crafts that you can grab on Amazon. Others are things that will take a little more work. That said, you can think about some festive things to do each day. This will help everyone get into the holiday spirit. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as coloring in a Christmas-themed photo or gluing cotton balls to make Santa’s beard on a paper plate.

5. Breakfast in Our Matching PJs

5. Breakfast in Our Matching PJs
123rf.com

I always wanted to do matching pajamas and when my oldest turned one, I was so excited to start this tradition. On Christmas morning, we all wake up in our matching PJs and I have a yummy breakfast planned. Some years I do a crockpot breakfast so it’s ready to go when we wake up. Others I make pancakes or french toast or something along those lines. A nice breakfast on a calm Christmas morning as we all enjoy each other’s company is something I want my children to remember.

Creating Memories That Will Last a Lifetime

Creating Memories That Will Last a Lifetime

When you are choosing family traditions for the holiday season, it is important to think about what you want your children to remember. At the end of the day, I don’t really remember any of the gifts I got as a child. Instead, I remember the magic of Christmas morning. I recall getting restless as we waited for my Nana to arrive and getting so excited to see her. Christmas morning breakfast and making Christmas cookies together are cherished memories of mine. So, when you are thinking about what traditions you’d like to take on, don’t forget that you’re creating memories that will last a lifetime.

According to a 2024 Pew Research Center survey, 47% of adults under 50 in the United States say they are unlikely to have children. As a parent, you may have a hard time with your children’s decision not to have kids of their own. Rest assured, life without grandchildren can be just as fulfilling. It may help to know why many young adults today are choosing not to have children.

1. The State of The World

climate change

The US maternal mortality rate is much higher than most other high-income countries. Some women are scared to have a child with the current state of the world. Beyond healthcare concerns, many are concerned about climate change. 84% of 10,000 people ages 16 to 25 years old across 10 countries were either moderately or extremely worried about climate change, according to a 2021 survey published in the Lancet Planet Health. Some feel that bringing a child into this environment is selfish. Many also are very concerned about school safety. In 2021, the number of gun-related deaths of children had increased by 107% since 2013.

2. Not Being Able to Afford a Child

not wanting a child
Pexels

In a large metro area of the United States, raising a child costs about $25,181 per year. A LendingTree study revealed that the cost of raising a small child jumped nearly 20% in a six-year time span. For some, this just isn’t feasible. Wages for millennials have stagnated and many carry significant debt.

3. Infertility or Other Medical Reasons

infertility
Pexels

You may not be aware of infertility challenges or medical issues that your children are facing. Not everyone is open about this sensitive topic. They may want children but are struggling. Be kind when broaching the subject of grandkids because you might not know the whole story.

4. Focus on Other Things

focus on career
Pexels

About one in five who say they don’t want children cite other factors like focusing on their career. Especially for women, it can be challenging to build a career and still feel like there is time to have children. There’s a growing sentiment that you can’t have it all. Many people feel like they have to choose, and children just aren’t a top priority.

5. Not Wanting to Be a Bad Parent

stressed out mom
Pexels

Millennials have often been called the anxious generation. Studies show that about 12% of millennials have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Having a child is one of the most stressful things. Especially today when everyone has an opinion on parenting, some millennials are deciding that they don’t want to be parents.

6. Little Support for New Parents

diapers
Pexels

In the United States, there is little support for new parents. The cost of childcare is high. Parents barely get adequate maternity or paternity leave. In many other countries, women can take up to a year or more of maternity leave. Additionally in many countries, like Finland, the government gives every new parent a baby box full of supplies. The Department of Health and Human Services currently launched a pilot program to provide supplies to new parents. They have received requests for more than 1 million diapers so far. If it takes a village to raise a child, the US is far from doing its part.

7. Haven’t Found The Right Partner

finding the right partner
Pexels

According to Pew Research, 33% of people who don’t want children say that they haven’t found the right partner. While having a partner isn’t a prerequisite to having a child, some people want to experience this life-changing event with a partner. Dating today is harder than ever, so finding a suitable partner can be a tall order.

Respecting Their Decisions

There is a sense of grief for you and your children when the decision is made to not have children. However, this is your children’s decision, and probably won’t change. The best course of action is to support your children in whatever they decide. Pressure from you will only strain the relationship. If you are mourning the loss of not being a grandparent, try and find ways to surround yourself with young children. Perhaps you can volunteer to tutor at a local library or help out at an after-school program at a Boy’s and Girl’s Club. While this won’t replace your longing for grandchildren, it can give you purpose and fulfillment.

What’s in a name? A name is something you use for identity, legal documents, and social interactions. But for some, it’s not something set in stone. Disliking a name is one reason why people change their names. In fact, a 2022 YouGov survey shows that among Americans who don’t like their first name, 15% are more likely to have already changed it. And about 44% have at least thought of changing theirs.

Are you expecting, or do you know someone who is? If you wonder which unusual baby names are likely to get changed once the kids turn into adults, this read is for you. Here’s a list of unique and unpopular baby names you might want to avoid.

1. Aiden

unpopular baby names
123rf.com

If we were in the 2000s, Aiden would be one of those unusual baby names that would sound really striking, fresh, and unique. But as the name enjoyed a meteoric rise, it has become so ubiquitous that it even spawned many other variations. These include Jayden, Kayden, and Brayden. Now, fast forward to the 2020s, Aiden has become one of those baby name regrets with a diluted distinctive appeal.

2. Conner

unusual baby names
123rf.com

Not all baby names are created equal. And if you wonder why some stand out as the most hated baby names, it could be because of how commonly misspelled they are. Case in point: Conner. Conner is a less common variation of Connor. And while Connor is a familiar name, its alternative spelling can bring forth frustration to anyone named after it. We understand why parents might want to give their kids a name with a twist. However, it may do more harm than good, especially if it feels like an unnecessary deviation from the standard one.

3. Issac

why people change their names
123rf.com

Issac is one of those unusual baby names that you might wonder where it came from. It’s a real name, but often born out of typographical errors or misunderstandings during birth registration. Like Conner is a strange deviation from Connor, Issac is a misspelling of the classic biblical name Isaac. This minor typo, however, can lead to a surprising amount of frustration for the name’s bearer. Issac frequently requires corrections, explanations, and sometimes even clarifications in official settings, as most people assume it’s a mistake or don’t recognize it immediately.

4. Margot

embarrassing baby names
123rf.com

One of the most common baby name trends is naming a baby after a celebrity — whether it’s a celebrity in the entertainment scene, sports, or even the political arena. Think Serena, Lebron, or Kennedy. In 2023, Barbie was one of the most popular movies. And its lead actress, Margot Robbie, saw her popularity surge alongside it. As audiences embraced her portrayal, the name Margot began gaining more attention as well, appealing to parents looking for a name that feels sophisticated yet modern. But, generally speaking, Names closely linked to celebrities or pop culture moments can lose their appeal as time passes.

5. Cillian

most hated baby names
123rf.com

Cillian is to Oppenheimer as Margot is to Barbie. Cillian is a native Irish name like Aiden. It carries a unique, soulful sound and has a beautiful indie appeal. And among U.S. parents, it could rank as one of the most unusual baby names that can help their kids stand out. Like the case of Margot (or even Elsa from Frozen or Arya from Game of Thrones), Cillian is a name with a high possibility of getting tied to a certain era. And it could get dated over time.

6. Willa

baby name trends
123rf.com

This name is one of those unusual baby names given by celebrities. Speaking of Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner — one of the hit series’ main stars — had her child with Joe Jonas named Willa. Willa is one of those unique baby names with a vintage feel. It’s simple, charming, and rooted in tradition, as it’s derived from William. This gives it a grounded, classic connection while still feeling fresh and understated. However, its brevity might make it feel incomplete to some, as though it’s missing an extra syllable or two.

7. Riot

unique baby names
123rf.com

Celebrities do have a knack for giving unusual baby names. Apart from Willa, we have Riot, which is Rihanna’s choice of name for her son. It won’t be surprising if someone as edgy as Rhianna would give such a bold name — a noun and a strong noun at that. Riot, as a name, gives off a rebellious vibe. If anything, it aligns with the superstar’s finance person. But not every parent is like Rihanna. For many, that name is polarizing. And it easily falls into the category of embarrassing baby names that will likely get changed in the future.

8. Hancock

how to choose a baby name
123rf.com

If you’d been given the name Hancock, would you be tempted to make one of those common name changes we often hear about? Names like Hancock may feel unique and even historical. It brings to mind figures like John Hancock, who is known for his famously large signature on the Declaration of Independence. However, it can easily draw attention today. It may even lead to jokes or unwanted associations, especially among children.

9. James

baby name meanings
123rf.com

James is not one of those unusual baby names. In fact, it’s too common that it may feel generic and impersonal. Although it has historical significance — with the name appearing in literary and religious texts — its widespread use over past generations makes it seem like a choice that wasn’t given much thought. Your kid may one day ask about the story behind their name. Having a thoughtful answer can make them feel their name was chosen with care. And James might not be one of those names that offers a unique story.

10. Zero

baby name regrets
123rf.com

Believe it or not, parents have considered naming their babies Zero. It’s unconventional and has a sleek, minimal appeal to it. However, if you consider it more carefully, Zero can have negative baby name meanings. It could signify absence or nothingness — something you wouldn’t want to be associated with your kid.

Avoiding Baby Name Mistakes

avoiding baby name mistakes
123rf.com

Naming someone may seem like a straightforward, simple task. But if you don’t know how to choose a baby name properly, you might end up giving your or someone else’s child a name that they’d regret having.

Some people change theirs as they grow because they will like their name doesn’t fit their personality or has received negative critiques or outright mockery.

So, the next time you go over a list of trendy, timeless, unique, or just utterly unusual baby names, keep in mind that names are a person’s stamp of identity. And you must do your best to give something that lasts a lifetime.

Let’s face it, grandmas are special. Remember those warm cookies she’d bake just for you? Or how she’d slip you a few dollars even when your parents said no? Now it’s our turn to show up for the amazing women who helped shape our childhood. Here’s why spending time caring for your grandmother isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s actually one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.

1. She’s Your Family’s Living History Book

Grandma
123rf.com

Your grandma’s got decades of amazing stories just waiting to be shared. When was the last time you heard about how your dad was a troublemaker in school? Or how your mom used to hide food under the table? Every time you sit with grandma, you’re getting an exclusive peek into your family’s past. She knows all those old family recipes (you know, the ones that taste like childhood), embarrassing stories about your parents, and wisdom that Google just can’t compete with. Best of all, she loves nothing more than sharing these treasures with you.

2. It’s Good for Both Your Hearts

Here’s something sweet, spending time with grandma isn’t just nice, it’s actually good for both of you! When she sees your face light up at her door, her whole day brightens. Those regular chats over coffee? They’re better than any medicine for fighting off loneliness and the blues. And let’s be honest, there’s something incredibly soothing about sitting with someone who’s weathered life’s storms and still comes out smiling. Your visits give her something to look forward to, and you’ll find yourself looking forward to them just as much.

3. Keeping Her Active

Remember when she used to chase you around the yard? Now it’s your turn to get her moving, but don’t worry, we’re not talking about CrossFit! Simple things like walking around the garden, doing gentle stretches together, or even cooking can keep her active and healthy. Plus, you’re there to make sure she’s taking her meds properly and eating well (though she’ll probably still try to feed you instead). When you’re around, she’s more likely to stay on top of her health game, and you get to learn her secret recipe for that amazing lasagna. Win-win!

4. Bridging That Generation Gap

Spending time with grandma

Okay, watching grandma figure out how to use her smartphone might be hilarious, but teaching her opens up whole new ways to connect. Sure, she might never fully understand why you’re always taking selfies, but she’s got some pretty wise insights about life that no app can give you. These conversations between generations are pure gold, she learns about your world, and you get to see life through her experienced eyes. Plus, there’s nothing quite like hearing her say “What’s a TikTok?” with a completely straight face.

5. Making Memories You’ll Treasure Forever

Let’s get real, these moments with Grandma are precious and irreplaceable. Every story she tells, every laugh you share, and even those times she fusses over whether you’re eating enough become memories you’ll hold dear. When she teaches you how to make her famous apple pie, you’re not just learning a recipe, you’re carrying on a tradition. These are the stories you’ll tell your own grandkids someday, and trust me, they’re worth their weight in gold.

6. Smart Money Moves (Yes, Really!)

Money and grandma
123rf.com

Here’s something practical, having grandma at home often makes more sense for your wallet than a fancy facility. But it’s not just about money, it’s about giving her the kind of personal care that only family can provide. You’ll pick up some useful life skills too, from managing medications to juggling doctor’s appointments. Plus, she probably still tries to sneak you pocket money, even though you’re all grown up!

7. Teaching the Next Generation What Really Matters

Grandma and child

When your kids or younger siblings see you caring for grandma, you’re showing them what family means. It’s like a masterclass in compassion, responsibility, and love, no textbooks required. You’re creating a ripple effect that’ll impact generations to come. Plus, watching grandma spoil the little ones just like she spoiled you? Priceless.

What Now?

Ready to step up your grandma game? Start small, maybe call her tonight just to chat, or plan a regular Sunday dinner. Trust me, even the tiniest gesture means the world to her. Share this with your siblings or cousins too, maybe you can tag-team grandma care and make it even more fun! Need some ideas for getting started? Your local senior center probably has tons of resources and fun activities you can do together. Or hey, just show up with her favorite snack and let the conversation flow.

Making the decision to adopt a child is huge. You need to spend time reflecting on it before moving forward. While adoption can bring fulfillment and a unique sense of purpose for some, it’s not the right path for everyone. So, if you are considering becoming an adoptive parent, here are eight signs that you’ve got what it takes.

1. You Have Patience and Resilience

1. You Have Patience and Resilience
123rf.com

Adopting a child requires a lot of patience. There is a significant waiting period when you are going through the application process. Not to mention, once you have adopted a child, there is a long-term journey of bonding and building trust with the child. Oftentimes, children in adoption situations come from complex backgrounds. They might need time to adjust and it requires a lot of understanding and patience from their adoptive parents. If you think you can give your time, energy, and understanding to the child, adoption could be a meaningful journey for you.

2. You’re Emotionally Ready to Give Unconditional Love

2. You’re Emotionally Ready to Give Unconditional Love
123rf.com

Adoption requires unconditional love for a child that isn’t biologically yours. You have to be emotionally prepared to love them. Many kids will need reassurance that their new family will love them no matter what. You should be prepared to be a source of stability and comfort for them. More than that, you need to show consistent love. Having this trait is a sign of a parent that is ready to adopt.

3. You Can Provide Stability and Routine

3. You Can Provide Stability and Routine
123rf.com

Kids in adoption situations thrive on routine and structure. They often come from homes where this wasn’t the norm. So, consistency in your home will make them feel safe. They’ll know what to expect every day, making it easier for them to adjust to their new home. It will also help foster a secure environment for them where they feel like they can relax. If your life is steady and you’re able to keep a consistent schedule, that’s a great indicator of readiness for adoption.

4. You’re Ready to Embrace a Child’s Unique Background

4. You’re Ready to Embrace a Child’s Unique Background
123rf.com

It’s important for adoptive parents to embrace a child’s history, culture, and experiences. Oftentimes, adopted children come from different backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for parents to be open-minded and respectful. They should also be willing to celebrate the child’s heritage and the diversity they bring to the family. This will show them that you value who they are. Finding yourself excited about honoring and learning about a child’s background means you are in a good place to consider adoption.

5. You Have a Strong Support Network

5. You Have a Strong Support Network
123rf.com

Parenting can be intense and adoption can prove to be difficult at times as well. Having a solid network of friends and family can make a huge difference. Being able to lean on other people can help you stay positive and motivated throughout your parenting journey. Additionally, your circle of friends and family can be a valuable part of your child’s life.

6. You’re Financially Prepared for the Responsibility

6. You’re Financially Prepared for the Responsibility

Raising a child involves a lot of financial commitments. When you are adopting, you have to factor in adoption costs, healthcare, education, and the day-to-day expenses of having a child. Being financially stable is essential. This will allow you to focus on your kid’s emotional and developmental needs rather than stressing about money. More than that, it also lets you fully engage in creating a nurturing environment for your new family member.

7. You’re Open to Learning and Growing

7. You’re Open to Learning and Growing
123rf.com

Becoming an adoptive parent requires a lot of learning and personal growth. Parents should be willing to seek guidance and attend workshops to discover the best ways to offer their child support. Being willing to grow as a person will help you adapt to their needs. Having this willingness may mean that adoption is a great fit for you.

8. You’re Committed to Long-Term Bonding and Attachment

8. You’re Committed to Long-Term Bonding and Attachment
123rf.com

You have to be committed to bonding with your child. Sometimes, this takes time and effort. You need to be fully committed to the long-term journey of developing an attachment to your child. While trust might develop more gradually, it’s important to allow the child space to open up when they feel comfortable. A dedication to fostering a secure bond can make a profound impact on the child’s sense of family and belonging.

Trust Yourself on the Adoption Journey

Adoption is an incredible thing. However, there are some traits you need to have for adoption to go well. Recognizing these qualities in yourself might be a good indication that you’re ready to take the leap and adopt. Remember, it’s not about being perfect. Being a good adoptive parent is more about being present, patient, and dedicated.

Bullying is a serious issue, and due to the internet and social media, it has expanded outside of the playground. Instead, bullies can attack their victims on social media platforms and create a much larger sphere of negative attention. For this reason, it is vital for parents to recognize signs that their child might be engaging in bullying behavior. Let’s seven signs that could suggest your child is exhibiting bullying tendencies.

1. Dominance Over Peers

bullying
123rf.com

Does your child consistently control other kids through intimidation? Do you have to warn them to not hit other kids frequently? Do they repeatedly interrupt others during conversations or activities? These children often display an unusual fixation with maintaining power in their social circles and may become visibly agitated when challenged. Another telltale sign is physical positioning, such as standing over others or invading personal space. If their communication style typically involves talking down to others or using condescending tones, then they may be bullying their peers.

2. Lack of Empathy

Meaner kids
123rf.com

Lack of empathy and responding to others’ appeals of emotional hurt is another red flag for parents. Have you witnessed your child inappropriately laughing at something hurtful or painful? Observable patterns include minimizing their actions’ consequences and showing resistance to acknowledging wrongdoing. Their responses to disciplinary measures often lack genuine remorse, instead focusing on personal inconvenience or punishment avoidance.

3. Physical or Verbal Intimidation

Yelling kids
123rf.com

Similar to number 1 on this, aggressive physical behavior is another red flag that your child may be a bully. Have you heard your child mocking or name-calling specific peers? Or, have you heard your child threatening other children at school or even siblings? Physical aggression might escalate when adults aren’t watching, and they often target the same individuals repeatedly.

4. Unexplained Valuable Items or Money

New bike
123rf.com

If your child has returned home from school with valuable property or items that you didn’t pay for, you should investigate how it was obtained. Your child does not have a job or income, so the sudden appearance of new possessions without clear sources raises concerns about potential extortion or theft. Potential bullies often make excuses about friends “giving” them things voluntarily. The pattern might include frequently having more lunch money or possessions than what you’ve provided.

5. Sneaky Social Media Behavior

Social media
123rf.com

Modern bullying frequently occurs on social media where supervision is minimal. Your child might exhibit secretive behavior around their phone or computer usage, quickly changing screens when adults approach. They could have multiple social media accounts, some hidden from parental view. Evidence of cyberbullying might include mean messages or exclusionary online behavior. Their digital footprint might reveal patterns of targeting specific individuals or groups. It is recommended that you check your child’s search history and track their online movements and interactions if you suspect they are bullying other kids.

6. Odd Friendship Dynamics

Weird friends
123rf.com

Does your child have friends or loyal subjects? Observe how your child’s friend group operates and their role within it. Are they surrounding themselves with some sycophants in training? These children often maintain their social status through fear rather than genuine friendship. Their friend group typically exhibits a clear hierarchy with your child at the top. Relationships tend to be superficial and based on conditional acceptance.

7. Manipulating Authority

Bullying
123rf.com

Bullies often display distinctive patterns when interacting with authority figures. Haven’t you seen this in movies and television? When the teacher is watching they are innocent, but when they are not paying attention, they are breaking the rules or inflicting harm. Yes, this may be your child. If your child has concealed sophisticated manipulation tactics from yourself or other parental authorities, they may be a bully.

Next Steps for Parents

Recognizing these behaviors in your child requires immediate, thoughtful intervention. Consider consulting school counselors or child psychologists who specialize in behavioral modification. Implement consistent consequences while maintaining an open dialogue about underlying emotions and motivations. Focus on developing empathy through controlled social interactions and positive reinforcement.

Seeing your child experience the trauma of bullying is heartbreaking for any parent. We, as their caretakers, want to protect them from anything that can hurt them. Unfortunately, one out of five students report bullying, making it an issue everyone should take seriously. It is even worse today because bullying now happens online, resulting in non-stop anxiety and pain for bullied children.

You can take steps as a guardian or parent to stop the bullying. However, it is also important to boost child confidence against bullying. By taking action at home to bully-proof your child, they will learn healthy coping skills to protect them from further harm. Here are the key steps you can practice at home to help build confidence against bullies:

1. Listen to Your Child

how to help child with bullying
123rf.com

The first step towards overcoming bullying is to listen. If your child has been expressing discomfort or showing signs that they are no longer interested in school or their favorite hobbies, talk to them. Encourage your child that you are there for them and will listen to their problems without judgment. It can also be helpful to keep a journal of events and instances as a way of supporting a bullied child who has opened up to you. These recordings can be shown to school staff as part of your plan for dealing with school bullies.

Listening to and hearing their frustrations without judgment gives your child a safe space to vent. Something as small as that can make a positive impact when empowering kids against bullying.

2. Reassure Them

build confidence against bullies
123rf.com

After listening to your child and their worries regarding bullying, the next way to boost the child’s confidence against bullying is by reassuring them. A reassuring and supportive parent can make a lot of difference when supporting a bullied child. Let them know that opening up to you was the right thing and that you will be with them through every step.

The support of a parent or guardian during this stressful time for a child is important. It makes all the difference in the world knowing those you love are in your corner, taking your side.

3. Educate Them About Bullying

dealing with bullies at school
123rf.com

Children, especially in their early years, may not understand the concept of bullying. They only know that a classmate is hurting them, either verbally or physically, and they don’t know the reason behind it. As a parent learning how to help a child with bullying, it is up to you to teach them and make them understand their situation. It is a difficult topic to discuss, especially when you and your child are both emotional and hurt by the situation. Still, it is a necessary step toward overcoming bullying.

Let your child know that bullying is not their fault. By educating your child, you can encourage a sense of empathy while also boosting the child’s confidence against bullying.

4. Practice Different Confident Responses

teach child to stand up to bullies
123rf.com

Sadly, it is fairly common for schools not to take bullying seriously. If this has been an issue for you and your child, you can teach a child to stand up to bullies. One way of doing this is by practicing assertive communication with kids. Make a list of responses that are simple and direct but also non-confrontational. Responses such as “Back off” and “Leave me alone” are great examples of confidence without being aggressive.

Sometimes, responses as simple as “Whatever” and walking away can be enough. The key to dealing with bullies at school is to avoid aggravating them. Non-response responses are a good way of shutting down bullying without adding fuel to the fire.

5. Recreate “What-if” Scenarios at Home

overcoming bullying
123rf.com

Practicing confident responses can be difficult. Especially if the bullying has been recurring and your child’s self-esteem has been greatly affected. Self-esteem and bullying are tied together, and without your support, your child can feel alone and isolated. At home, it is a good suggestion to recreate different “what-if” scenarios to boost child confidence against bullying.

You can play the role of the bully and teach your child to stand up to bullies. Building their confidence is the best way to bully-proof your child. Once they learn how to respond to their bully with conviction, the bully may lose interest in their efforts to make your child feel small.

6. Praise Their Progress

bully-proof your child
123rf.com

Positive self-talk is an important skill for kids to develop over the years. Many bullied kids feel like there is something wrong with them, and it is their fault they are bullied. The best way to empower kids against bullying is to encourage their progress. When you praise their progress, you build their self-worth and self-esteem. This gives them more confidence to speak up, especially when learning more assertive communication for kids.

7. Talk Openly

self-esteem and bullying
123rf.com

Lastly, always keep the line of communication open between you and your child. The best way to boost child confidence against bullying is by instilling in the knowledge that they can always turn to you for support. A strong support system at home builds resistance, and bullying will not have such a major effect. Dealing with bullies at school starts at home and with you as your child’s caretaker and protector. While we can’t shield them from the world, we can give them the right tools and support system they need to overcome bullying.

Slow and Steady Process: Boost Child Confidence Against Bullying

empowering kids against bullying
123rf.com

The issues with bullying your child faces will not be resolved overnight. Chances are, their struggles when it comes to dealing with bullies at school also didn’t start overnight. As much as we would like to, there is no magic word to stop bullying at once. The best and only way to help your child is to build confidence against bullies so they can stand up for themselves. Once they learn how to be confident, the steps to bully-proof your child have begun.

Always be your child’s main support system. If you are there with them every step of the way when dealing with bullies at school, they will feel empowered to stand up for themselves.

Have you ever seen a child walking down the street and their backpack looks like it has a car engine stuffed inside? Or, have you seen a child at a bus stop throw a banana in their bag as their ride rolls up? Well, as parents, it’s our job to get into those terrifying things and remove unnecessary and stinky things that don’t need to be there. Here are seven items you should remove from your child’s backpack right away to ensure their safety, comfort, and academic success.

1. Old Assignments and Papers

Paper
123rf.com

Now, this is a given, your child’s backpack has more than 30 crumbled worksheets in it. Not to mention, graded assignments and the random notification that told you about a field trip you only found out about the night before. Yes, all these unnecessary papers are just crammed into your child’s bookbag, so set aside time each week to go through papers with your child, deciding what to keep for future reference and what to recycle. This habit will allow for better communication as the weeks stack up.

2. So Many Water Bottles

Water bottles
123rf.com

While staying hydrated is very important for growing boys and girls, carrying five water bottles is overkill. One refillable and reusable water bottle is all a child needs for a school day. For the love of Mother Earth, give them some training on how and where to refill their water bottle throughout the day. This approach not only reduces weight but also promotes environmental consciousness by minimizing plastic waste. Also, plastic water bottles can get heavy in a hurry! Don’t give them back problems, people!

3. Tablets and Other Stray Electronics

Tablets at school
123rf.com

The new security blanket for today’s kiddos is a tablet. These rubber-padded devices playing Pay Patrol on repeat are great when you go out for a family meal; however, electronic devices in the classroom are not cool. A cell phone for emergencies is understandable, but leave the tablets and other handheld electronics at home. Reducing electronic clutter in the backpack helps your child focus on learning and reduces the chances of expensive gadgets getting lost or stolen during the school day.

4. Excessive School Supplies

supplies
123rf.com

We see this every year, parents loading up on school supplies from big box retailers. Is there a reason why you need enough colored pencils to revitalize the Sistine Chapel? Or, better yet, if you, aggressively prepared parents, are dead set on buying the whole shelf of washable markers at Target, can you give them to Jimmy in phases? Lugging around an entire semester’s worth of notebooks, folders, and writing utensils is unnecessary and burdensome for children. Work with your child to determine what they need daily and keep extra supplies at home or in their locker.

5. Heavy Textbooks Not Needed That Day

Textbooks
123rf.com

This item is more for our older school-age children, but we should only bring textbooks to school that are needed for the day. Set some time aside with your child to create a schedule of which books they need each day and encourage them to swap out books daily or use their locker between classes. Let’s save these kids from falling backward with a turtle shell of textbooks on the school staircase, right, can we? By managing textbook carry strategically, you can significantly reduce the risk of posture problems thanks to unnecessarily heavy backpacks.

6. Forgotten Lunch Containers

Lunch
123rf.com

This one gives me the creeps. Inside the deep darkness of school backpacks across America is a plastic container getting hot with uneaten food, molding, growing mold, and changing into something terrifying in the forgotten darkness. Pardon the drama but parents need to establish a routine where your child empties their lunch box or bag as soon as they get home from school.
